Screensavers

Screensavers are easy to install.  They come as a setup file which you can download to your desktop and then double click to begin the setup.  Just follow the few instructions during setup.  Un-install with the Add-Remove software feature in the Control Panel.

Browsers

FireFox is one of the best browsers you can find.  It is secure, has tabbed windows and many, many extensions and add-ons that you can download to make surfing a really great experience.   If you are a web developer, this browser is a must!  You can't live without it once you have downloaded the powerful developer tools.  Firefox supports all platforms.   Download - all platforms

Comments:
Since I have FireFox, I only use IExplorer to check the sites I create. I'm especially enchanted with the tabbed windows and the many useful extensions, even rss editors and xml editors.  The downside: Some sites are IExplorer native and do not function well on FireFox.  But  Firefox has an extension you can download to simulate IExplorer, so even that problem can be solved :-)

Office Software

OpenOffice is a multilingual office suite compatible with all other major office suites, including Microsoft Office.  The product is free to download, use, and distribute and it is a great alternative for Microsoft Office. It has an text editor that can handle Microsoft doc format, a spreadsheet that is compatible with MS Excell, a database program and much more.
Tens of millions of people use the application and governments throughout the world are mandating it and its file format (OpenDocument or ODF ). Imagine, if you have 250 employees and you have to buy 50 licenses of Microsoft Office while there is free software out there doing practically the same! 
The software is, compared with MS Office, even superior at some points, but it has some small bugs here and there that need to be solved.  It can crash unexpectedly sometimes, so you need to save your work regularly.   But OpenOffice can count on a wide range of voluntary programmers, all eager to make it better every day.  For instance, spelling dictionaries are free and you can install as many as you like.
If you have never used office software, consider using OpenOffice because financial contributions are completely voluntary and updates are free as well.
For Mac: although there is a beta version for Mac, it has still a way to go to become as reliable and efficient as the Win version.  Therefore, NeoOffice is a better alternative for the time being. NeoOffice and OpenOffice are fully compatible with each other.

Comments:
I'm well acquainted with Microsoft Office and OpenOffice and I would only miss MS Office for its Visual Basic engine because that is really fabulous.
But if you're not the programmer type and just want to use the integrated software for your business, OpenOffice is the obvious choice if you work on a Windows environment.
You cannot replace PowerPoint so easily, though.  I would advice to buy that separately if you need presentation software for projection or kiosk.

Comments:
NeoOffice is as good as OpenOffice. I work with it quite often on my Mac and don't notice any difference (Yes, I work on Win and Mac and I find them both great :-).  I even have the idea that this suite is more stable.  The programmers from NeoOffice started worked on the OpenOffice project, but didn't like the internal politics which are primarily Windows and Linux orientated.

Utilities

Simple password creator
You need to create passwords and your imagination is running out? This little tool creates them for you: passwords with a mix of case sensitive numbers and characters, 4 to 15 characters long.   This free tool is offered by Raboo Design.

Comments:
I created this for myself as I needed an utility that could create a password with just  push on a button.  You can select and copy the result. I use it quite regularly as I need to create passwords for databases and web site access.
